Have you ever wanted to make a quilt but thought it was a complicated process?  Join us for ‘block a month’ class and make the blocks that you want to make.  Each month will introduce a new type of block using different shapes and piecing techniques.  Block patterns include Rail Fence, Churn Dash, Bowtie, Bear Tracks, Ohio Star, and Dutchman’s Puzzle. This is a beginner level class or can be a refresher for someone who has done some basic piecing.

This project will give you an opportunity to learn and perfect several techniques including broderie perse style appliqué and freestanding machine embroidery. You will explore placement of embroidery motifs and learn more about the use of your built in decorative stitches. While this project is not particularly difficult, it will require considerable time to complete.

This quilt is made up of half square triangle blocks. We will be using Thangles TM to make the half square triangles. This is a method where you get very accurate triangle blocks. The choice of light and dark fabrics will give an interesting design to this quilt.

You will come to class with a block and we will go from there – measuring, doing square, triangular, appliqué, curved borders and more. When you are finished, you will have a wallhanging of multiple borders

Zig-Zag

This Zig-Zag Quilt was designed by Marti Michell as another great way to use her Flying Geese Ruler.  It’s a great scrap quilt and easy to piece.  The unique pre-trimmed corners of the triangles guarantee straight rows that are the key to a great quilt.  During class we’ll cut and piece two or three rows and set them together to get you off to a good start!

Beginner’s Sampler Quilt Class

The sampler wallhanging class is a terrific learning tool. Through your sampling, you will learn to hand piece, hand appliqué, do white on white quilting, sashing, borders, how to baste your 3 layers together and a method to finish your edges. Your finished project will be a nine patch sampler with sashings and borders measuring 35” to 40” square.

In this class, you will not only learn how to get started, but you’ll learn the process through to the finished design of the quilt. No drawing or drafting experience is necessary. If you can draw a straight line with a ruler, you can design your own quilt.

Are you drowning in a sea of scraps that you can’t bear to throw away, yet seem to have no reason to keep?  If so, this is the lifesaver quilt you’ve been waiting for.

We use true scraps of fabrics cut in widths from 1 ¼ to 2 ½ inches wide and any length! Some need to be at least 10 inches long.

The strips are string pieced onto a paper foundation (which is also scrap!) This quilt is so easy and works up in no time.  Everyone from beginner to advanced will have fun completing this quilt.   You have two patterns to choose from.

Introduction to Paper Piecing

Linda Schwalm will teach basic paper-piecing using foundation papers.  You will learn the sewing machine technique while making a Golden Star block.  This is only a 7 inch block, but you can do it!  You will be provided a kit which includes printed patterns for your star and precut fabrics matching the sample block.  This is a one-session, beginner class.

The blocks are made from the New York beauty pattern. We will make an asymmetrical quilt that will add flowers, leaves and vines to the center. Several techniques of preparing appliqué pieces will be explored.

Stained Glass

This is a quilt as you go stained glass wallhanging. Use of a fusible web and fusible bias tape makes this very streamlined with the project being quilted as the “leading” is stitched. Depending on the design chosen, it is also a great way to use those smaller pieces of your favorite fabrics.

Using Alex Anderson’s “Begin to Quilt” book, we will be making a lap quilt or a baby/young child’s quilt (your choice) and a pillow case to match. The Flying Geese 6 ½” block is the basic block in this quilt. This is a fun project that you will enjoy for years to come!

Pineapple Medley

This class begins with the pineapple center of this quilt. You’ll learn a technique that uses no foundations, no templates, and is easily done with just 2” strips. Design variations are simple, with little or no math involved. Simple machine appliqué flowers and vines make up the next part of the class. The final part deals with prairie points and other embellishment techniques that will give your quilt its own custom look. Have fun designing your own quilt using this fun and versatile block as the center attraction!

Twisted Log Cabin

This quilt is a “twist” on the traditional log cabin block. If you have watched the television show “Simply Quilts”, you will have seen this quilt in the very beginning of each episode. It looks like a pinwheel design but is paper pieced like a traditional log cabin with the sides of the block at an angle to the center triangle. It’s easy paper piecing but gives a very dramatic look to the quilt. It’s not hard and you will get a beautiful quilt in the end.

Seasonal Landscapes Pictures

For a quick gift to a friend or family member, whip up a seasonal landscape scene that can either be framed or made into a mini-quilt.  The class will teach using small pieces of fabric to create a scene of the season.  Use strip quilting and embellishment ideas like beading, using bits of lace or embroidery to enhance your pictures.  Learn to cover a mat with fabric to match your landscape.  This is an easy project for anyone who can use the rotary cutter and do basic straight stitching.  Go home with a completed project.

Paper Pieced Mariner’s Compass

Linda Schwalm will teach this 2-part workshop using tissue paper foundations. Participants will construct a mariner’s compass block set on point, half-square triangles, paper pieced flying geese and borders will be added.  Final construction will result in approximately a 35 x 35 inch wall hanging.

English Paper Piecing

You will work on a small 8” by 11” hand stitched piece which will depict our beautiful PA countryside. Our source for inspiration will be a picture from which you will learn how to hand piece fabric together to make the scene. No experience needed, just thread a needle. Hand work lap projects are always nice to work in front of the TV or while waiting for appointments. Later you can embellish your piece with beads, embroidery stitches and quilting, as you wish.

This is a traditional Log Cabin with just a little “angle” to it. It’s not as hard as it looks and can be used in so many ways – as a table runner or even a Christmas tree skirt. Strip piecing really makes this project go quickly!
