Class Leather Cutwork Bag - Fayetteville

This is a two session class.  There will be some homework in between the two sessions, however, you’ll have ample time to complete it and I’m here to help!  If you are not comfortable completing the homework at home on your own, I’ll be happy to work with you to meet in between the sessions.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: This class is for those who are comfortable with doing machine embroidery.
Requirements: You will need an embroidery machine in good working order that you are familiar with using, your embroidery unit, your hoops, stabilizer, fabric, threads, embroidery needles, bobbins, and a basic sewing/embroidery kit of supplies including scissors, snips, embroidery scissors, needles, bobbins, screwdriver, etc... If your cut-work design is not built into your machine, you will need to download it and load it onto a thumb drive to use in class. I will bring my laptop to class if you need any help getting the design files onto your thumb drive. Supplies you will need: - mid-weight tear away stabilizer, I used OESD?s Ultra Clean & Tear and it worked well with faux suede. The amount that you need is determined by the size of the hoop that you use. You will have a minimum of two hoopings, but it?s always good to have extra, just in case. - embroidery thread (for your embroidery and cut-work design) - bobbin thread - sewing thread (to sew your bag together) - main fabric, This can be leather, suede, faux suede or marine vinyl. Faux leather would not be the best option because white will show where the pieces are cut and throughout the cut-work design. The longest pieces that are needed are 50? long for the strap(s). Keep this in mind when deciding how much you will need. I purchased 1 yard of 54? wide faux suede and I have enough let over to make a matching clutch! Class instruction includes cutting out your fabric pieces. - ? yard of the peek through fabric (I used Batik and it turned out great!) - ? yard of lining fabric (I used a solid Kona that coordinates well with both my main fabric and the Batik.) - 55? of leather cord (For the bag tie closure.) cut work needles (These come in a set of four and you need all of them to complete the design. If it fits in your budget, you may want a second set, just in case.) - leather needles - machine feet: - utility foot A - sensor Q foot - non-stick glide foot H (I used this for the faux suede and it worked well. It would not be the best option for the marine vinyl or the leather.) - roller foot (This foot will work best if you choose to use leather or marine vinyl.) - 360 X 350 Majestic Hoop (It will be easiest if you have this hoop. I used a 360 X 250 hoop and had to double hoop. It can be done, but there are some tricks to getting it to all line up.) Strap options: - clip hooks (The pattern calls for two and they only use one strap. I adapted the pattern to use two straps so that I can use it ?back pack style?. If you choose the one strap method, you will only need two clip hooks. If you choose the two strap method, you will need four clip hooks.) - D rings (The pattern calls for two for use with only one strap. If you choose to make two straps, you will need four D rings.) - eyelets (I used eight 5/32". You just want to be sure that the leather cord that you plan to use for closing your bag will fit through the eyelets. I have the eyelet pliers tool. I will bring it for class use. Please, don't feel like you need to purchase that.) - rivets (I used 8mm X 6mm Double-Cap Rivets. These give a nice finished look on both sides. The 8mm is the size of the cap of the rivet and the 6mm is the length of the shaft. You need to make sure that it will fit through two layers of your fabric with a minimum of 2mm of the shaft left so that it will crimp properly. I also have the Double-Cap Rivet Tool Kit and I will bring it as well. Please, don't feel like you need to purchase that.) - glue (I used E6000 for my faux suede. I'm sure it will work for the leather as well. It will glue anything to anything! I will be honest and say that I have not tried it on leather. If you have used another glue on leather with success, I would use that. Also, I would test a small sample just to be sure it'll work. There are two places in the project that it is used. The first is to glue the seam allowances open. So, it's gluing the wrong sides together. The second is when making the tassels. For that, it's gluing the wrong side to the right side.) You will also need a hammer. (I know, it seems silly when we're talking about a sewing project. We will use it for adding the rivets and for "ironing" down the leather seams. You can't iron actual leather, so you use the hammer to pound them open and then use the glue to keep them open. Some wax paper will come in handy for laying your pieces out while the glue sets. This will prevent you from accidentally gluing them to something that you don't want them glued to.) If you do not have any of these supplies, please, reach out to the staff at the Sew ?n Place. They can bring them up from Sew ?n Sweep if they have it or they?ll be happy to order them for you. Please, let me know if you have any questions! I'm always happy to help. :) I'm soooooo excited about this bag!!!! I really didn't want to leave it as a sample. It was hard to let it go! You can reach me via email at annaloves2create@gmail.com.
