Class Beginner Sewing - Fayetteville



In this class you will learn:
• sewing room safety
• how to select the right fabrics for each project
• how to select the best thread & needle for each project
• how to use a variety of tools and notions
• how to pin & cut out your project pieces
• how to sew straight & curved seams
• how to clip & trim seams
• how to top stitch for a finished look
• how to add a zipper
• how to add buttons & buttonholes
• how to add an elastic casing
• how to add trim
• using fusibles
• how to read & use a pattern
• and sew much more
• all while getting to know your machine better :)

We will complete a fun project each week that reinforces the skills we learned in previous weeks and builds up our knowledge base while learning new techniques.

You will need to bring a basic sewing kit to class each week. It should contain: scissors, small snips, pins, a marking pen, bobbins for your machine, a variety of sewing machine needles, hand sewing needles, a tape measure/ruler, and a seam ripper in case a friend needs it.

Beginner Sewing Supply List


Week One – Kitchen Gripper/Scrubby
• gripper/scrubby material will be provided by instructor
• a fat quarter of 100% cotton fabric
• thread

Week Two – Simple Decorative Pillow
• three fat quarters, one for the front, two matching for the back OR a fat quarter for the front and a ½ yd for the back OR 1 yd if you want to use the same fabric on the front and the back
• three buttons, 1” or larger
• 1 pkg jumbo rick rack (optional) (you can also use lace trim, still optional)
• two pieces of 3” X 20” of fusible medium weight interfacing
• one 18” square pillow form, or smaller
• thread

Week Three – Zipper Bag
• 2 coordinating/contrasting fat quarters
• 14” polyester/nylon zipper (longer is okay, shorter is not)
• 13” X 18” piece of fusible fleece
• zipper foot for your machine
• thread

Week Four – Round Drawstring Bag
• 2 coordinating/contrasting fat quarters
• ½ yard cord/ribbon
• thread

Week Five – PJ Shorts
• Butterick pattern B6531
• 1 to 2 yards of fabric (cotton or flannel)
• 1 to 1 ½ yards of 1” wide elastic
• thread

Skill Details: This class is for beginners.
Materials Included: Instructor will provide the kitchen grippy/scrubby material. Students will need to bring the cotton fabric for this project.
