Class - Tamarack Jacket: Wonky Log Cabin Style – Fayetteville

Turn scraps, color, and improvisational piecing into a one-of-a-kind quilted jacket! In this workshop, we’ll use wonky log cabin blocks to create the quilted fabric for the Tamarack Jacket by Grainline Studio. Students will explore intuitive color placement, off-center construction, and playful angles before assembling their blocks into wearable patchwork.

Once the quilted panels are complete, we’ll cut and sew the Tamarack Jacket, including pockets, binding, and your choice of snaps or another suitable closure. The result will be a cozy, fully lined jacket that reflects your own creative style.

Skill Level

Confident beginner to intermediate. Students should be comfortable operating a sewing machine, sewing an accurate seam allowance, and following a garment pattern. Previous quilting experience is helpful but not required.

Pattern

Each student must purchase and bring their own copy of the Tamarack Jacket pattern by Grainline Studio. Please choose your size using the pattern’s finished garment measurements before class.

The pattern is not included in the class fee unless otherwise stated.

Supplies

• Tamarack Jacket pattern
• Creative Grid Ruler – “Wonky Log Cabin Template
• 1” Bias Tape Maker
• Light Weight Batting
• Jacket lining fabric – 2 ½ - 3 yds depending on size
• 1 yd each of light to medium colored fabric
• 1 yd each of med to dark colored fabric
• 1 ½ - 2 yds for sleeves and  right front panel with pocket
• Thread for piecing, quilting, and construction
• Snaps or another preferred closure
• Sewing machine in good working order
• Walking foot, if available
• Standard sewing foot
• Fresh machine needles
• Rotary cutter, mat, and quilting ruler
• Fabric scissors and small snips
• Seam ripper
• Pins and/or clips
• Marking tool
• Measuring tape
• Pattern-tracing supplies
• Optional: a favorite jacket or shirt for discussing fit

Homework

Students should:

1. Purchase the Tamarack Jacket pattern.
2. Review the size chart and select a starting size.
3. Trace or print and assemble the required pattern pieces.
4. Prewash and press all washable fabrics.
5. Cut fabric scraps into assorted strips. Strips may vary in width for a more improvisational look.
6. Wind several bobbins and install a fresh needle in the sewing machine.

Please do not cut the jacket pieces from your fashion fabric before class. The pattern pieces will be cut after the wonky log cabin panels have been assembled and quilted.

 Session One: Design and Piecing

Choose a color palette, plan the overall jacket layout, and begin constructing wonky log cabin blocks.

Session Two: Building and Quilting the Panels
Join blocks into yardage, fill gaps, position the jacket pattern pieces, and quilt the outer fabric to the batting and lining.

Session Three: Jacket Construction and Finishing
Cut and assemble the jacket, add pockets, finish the edges with binding, and install the closures.

Students should expect to complete some piecing or quilting between sessions. The amount of homework will depend on individual sewing speed and the complexity of the chosen design.

Finished Project

Each student will create a unique quilted Tamarack Jacket featuring an improvisational wonky log cabin design. Most students will make substantial progress during class, although final quilting, binding, or closure installation may need to be completed at home.
