First steps in Longarm Free Motion Quilting

March 8, 15 & 22  5 pm – 7 pm

In-person class limited to 5 people. 

Cost: $90 for the three classes. Held at Sew n Place Fayetteville, PA location 

Learn the very basics of longarm free motion quilting with this hands- on series of 3 classes. This “first steps” series is specifically for those who are new to longarm quilting and designed to help you jump-start your skills. Everyone will have time to work at the Juki longarm. You will be assigned homework to work on specific skills between classes. Here are some of the topics we will cover:

· Longarm Machine tips and maintenance

· Forming good stitches: Understanding tension and needle flex

· Starting and stopping your quilt path;

· Loading your quilt

· Building muscle memory – 5 basic shapes to master by doodling, then transfer those skills to the longarm.

· Turning basic shapes to all-over quilting designs.

· Learn about batting and thread choices.

· Jump-start your quilting by using paper pantographs.

Supplies needed:

· Longarm machine

· About 5 yards of muslin (or any fabric) for practice at home

· Batting:

o One package of batting (at least throw size) for practicing at home.

o A few pieces of different types of batting for testing. (At least 12”x12”.) If you don’t have any small scraps of batting, that’s fine. Just let the instructor know.

· Thread

· Drawing pad or small dry erase board/markers. Jan likes to use a spiral artist’s drawing notebook available at Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

· Binder for handouts

 Your instructor is Jan DiIulio, owner of Quilting Nest in Fairfield, PA. Jan has completed APQS Certification for Fons and Porter. Her goal is to help you become a better quilter and have fun with your machine. If you have questions, reach out to Jan by email at quiltingnest.fairfield@gmail.com.

Space is limited in all of our classes. Please, sign up early!
Please let us know at least 2 weeks in advance if you need to back out of a class. Our teachers work very hard preparing for class and to do so properly, they need to have a head count a couple of weeks before the class begins.
Because all class fees go to our teachers, we cannot refund class fees if you do not show up for a class or if you cancel less than 1 week before the start of the class.
